DESCRIPTION
Calling from the DARK operates on two levels: it is a call from the space of origin — the darkness from which the universe came into existence with a big bang, the black hole — and simultaneously a call from the dark side of human existence, the environmental destruction we inflict on the planet and its future generations. The gong, a gamelan percussion instrument with roots in Javanese and South Asian spiritual traditions — historically used to syncretise different faiths in search of common ground — is not played to please. Its rhythmic and non-rhythmic sounds are designed to create discomfort, to break the audience out of the sleep of reason and into a state of awareness. Each strike is an invocation — a demand to remember, to wake, and to act.
