DESCRIPTION
Part of the Silence series, Search for Silence… An Escape is a 2.5-hour performance in which the search for silence is enacted as a literal act of physical construction. With every brick placed, the restlessness and urgency to reach completion intensifies and the body turns increasingly inward toward the Self. When the four walls close and the ceiling is sealed, a kind of aeropause is created — nothing can enter from outside, but the brain cannot be kept out. The moments of contentment that arrive are too few, vanishing like bubbles on water, yet I remain reluctant to come out, waiting for their return.
I appear wearing white in the center of an enclosed space in the basement of an under-construction building. I create four walls around me with plaster cast white bricks and cover the structure with a ceiling, with myself inside. I stay inside the dark space.
